You do not need to be incompatible with everyone to be competitive. Look at Sentry (getsentry.com). It is 100% OSS. Anyone can run it, yet people keep paying for this service, because it is worth it to offload this responsibility on someone else. Or look at tarsnap, or even RackSpace.

To stay competitive you need to provide value. Everything else is gimmicks to pretend like you provide value that almost never work out in the long run.
