If we're talking about monochrome printers, let me throw my Brother
MFC-8810DW into the ring. Reasonable duty cycle for a guy who prints
books, nice crisp printer, low consumable costs, I think it's 27 WPM.
About $350 on sale at Costco a year ago.

Just go to the Brother site and download the drivers. The printer works
easily with Brother's drivers. The scanner is very difficult with their
drivers, though I did get it to work with their drivers briefly. But
nowadays, I just put a thumb drive in the Brother, scan to USB, and
sneakernet to my computer. This wouldn't work for the guy who does a
lot of scanning, but it works for me.

One downside to the Brother MFC-8810DW: Make sure it's on a good
electrical circuit. With mine, the lights dim and my computer's UPS
kicks in every time the motor comes on.
