After the January meetings (which seemed like a promising start) things
went silent and I thought this was dead in the water. Then this
afternoon I saw this from left field on Facebook:

Inaugural meeting of the RTP chapter-to-be of the Internet Society is
this Friday 4/24/2015 from 5-7 PM at the Institute of Emerging Issues
4106-Lecture Hall in the NCSU James B. Hunt Jr. Library. The flyer I
received doesn't say RSVPs are necessary. "The Internet Society is an
international non-profit organization that provides guidance to local
governments, education institutions and businesses on issues related to
Internet standards and policies."
