it's completely possible that your apps are stewed. However the user code should 
have survived what you did.

Before you start reinstalling and getting too far from the state the machine was 
in when it started having trouble, you might want to do some sanity checks. Is 
your disk OK? (run the smartctl long test `smartctl -t long /dev/sda`, from a 
livecd eg systemrescue disk).

If it's OK make a dd copy of the disk, then start messing with the disk
