[TriLUG] I just got my 15 minutes of fame

I believe the correct technical term would be: "Pissed in their Wheaties"

Steve certainly managed to 'stimulate' an under damped system that is
taking a long time for the response to die out.

I thought Steve's comment that started the whole rant makes an excellent
point and is fundamental to the reason why the *NIX platform is still
going strong 30+ years later. Granted, Apple was around at that same
time, but it's biggest products bear little to no resemblance of what the
company started as.

Going somewhat off topic for a second, well, I guess it really isn't too
off topic as it has to do with the power and responsibility that a Linux
user has at their fingertips as compared to a Nanny System like Apple,
last Friday I managed to wipe out almost 9Gb of data from a server machine
with an errant RM command. Note to self, in the future avoid using RM
while drinking .... Thankfully, I was able to restore the data that was
backed up on Jungledisk (chosen because of this list), though I did have
to pull up a 10 year old laptop running a semi bungled installation of
Arch because the damned control panel application wouldn't launch on the
version of Mint I was running. There certainly is something to be said
for the motto of do one thing and do it well rather than trying to be
everything from soup to nuts.

While it is old, the book, The Art of Unix Programming is certainly worth
reading and has many insights that I see violated in applications today,
usually to their detriment. My favorite being the importance of keeping
data as human readable text rather than using custom binary schemes.
Unfortunately, so many commercial developers are more concerned about
keeping their shit secret than they are about producing a working product
when in reality if they focused on the latter, the former would likely
take care of itself.
