Knee-jerk as it sounds, Joe's got a point hidden in his snark.  It's way 
better to cultivate an atmosphere in which your kids can talk to you 
about anything (and I do mean AN-Y-THING) without fear of judgmental or 
dismissive responses, than to try to prevent them from doing/observing 
any particular thing.  They're going to do/observe it anyway eventually, 
whether or not they're like most kids and mentally append "while I'm 
watching" to any "don't" rule you give them.
