      I think the issue is a bit bigger than I originally thought. I
tried attaching a garden-variety wireless usb thingie on it, something
that has worked fine in my home kvm  (arduino and UPS are fondled
using that) setup, and once again Windows refuses to notice it is
there.

I guess it is time to take this to the kvm list.
