I agree with your historical assesment. I made the decision to stick with GNOME becasue Red Hat did and that decsion has served me well in my career, but on the occasion that I find myself on KDE, I often wish Red Hat would have stuck with KDE. I felt like I was going backwards when they made the switch to GNOME. However, I am so entrenched in GNOME that I will most likely stick with it. I like to minimize my tool set to minimize the time learning stuff that I already have solutions for.
