Interesting discussion. Googling this found articles about HDMI, which
indicate that a new HDMI 2.0 standard supports higher resolution: up
to 3820 x 2160 @ 60 fps.

The cables are unchanged, but to use it both ends need to support HDMI 2.0.
So first check your monitor specs.

However, it's not clear which adapters support HDMI 2.0. My impression is
that it's mostly high-end cards:

I just sent an email to EVGA:

*Your video adapter product listings seem to just say "HDMI," with no
indication of the version. Can you tell me which ones support HDMI 2.0, and
which ones support only HDMI 1.4?*

NewEgg does have the ability to filter searches for HDMI 2.0. I don't know
how trustworthy that filter is. The adapters it finds seem to start at
about $100, but most of them are dual-fan monsters. If you're programming,
rather than gaming, I'd prefer a lower-performance fanless adapter, but
that doesn't seem to be an option:
